Serengeti Safaris — When to Travel

Thank you for your interest in our Serengeti safaris. The info below will help you decide the best time to go, especially if you want to witness the Great Migration.

In short:
If you want to see river crossings, aim for
July–October, with
July & August
the most popular months.

July–October

Dry season. Migration reaches the northern Serengeti and the Mara River (into Kenya’s Masai Mara). Iconic river crossings are a major highlight.

July & August

Prime time for Mara River crossings—highest chance to witness dramatic herds braving the water.

June–October

Grumeti & Mara River crossings occur across this span; timing varies by rains and grazing.

Late July–Early August

Peak drama: herds cluster at the riverbanks—spectacular crossings if conditions align.

November–March

Herds return to the southern Serengeti for the green season and calving grounds.

January–February

Calving season in the south—excellent predator action and new-born sightings.
